What Durga Puja is
Five days for the goddess Durga — Shashthi to Vijayadashami — kept abroad by the Bengali associations in rented halls, with the pandal, the dhak, bhog for everyone and the sindoor khela on the last day.
If it is your first one
- Anjali is in the morning, usually around 10 or 11; arrive before it, dressed up — a sari or a panjabi is the norm on Ashtami.
- Bhog is free and for everyone, but the association runs on donations: give something at the desk.
- On Dashami, married women play sindoor khela; everyone else watches and eats sweets — then the idol is taken to the water.
