Brussels’ Favourite Indian Restaurants

Brussels has a lot of Indian restaurants and they are not evenly good. These three are the ones this community sends people to — one for North Indian, one for biryani, one for South Indian — which is usually the only shortlist you need.
The shortlist
Rangla Punjab — North Indian
In Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and rated around 4.6 on Google. Warm, unshowy, and the food is the reason to go rather than the room. The butter chicken is the dish people come back for; the tandoori chicken is the other order worth making.
Hyderabad House — biryani
Around 4.4 on Google, and specifically Hyderabadi rather than generically North Indian, which is the point. The biryani is the signature and the thing to order — if you have been disappointed by biryani elsewhere in Brussels, this is the correction.
Saravana Bhavan — South Indian
Where to go for dosa, idli and a proper thali. The obvious answer when what you actually want is South Indian vegetarian food rather than a curry house menu with a dosa on it.
Ask for it the way you want it. Kitchens here calibrate spice for a Belgian room by default. Say clearly how you want it and most will oblige — the difference between a disappointing meal and a good one at the same table is frequently just that sentence.
Practical notes
- Book at weekends. These are not large rooms and Friday and Saturday evenings go.
- Check lunch menus. Weekday lunch deals are common and markedly cheaper than the evening carte.
- Vegetarian and Jain requests are generally well understood at all three — mention it when booking rather than on arrival.
- Beyond Brussels — Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven all have their own places worth the trip.
