Also worth knowing
Visiting: take your shoes off at the door and dress modestly. In a gurdwara cover your head and sit on the floor; langar, the free vegetarian meal, is open to everyone who comes. Most temples open in a morning and an evening session with a gap between — the Gita Mandir in Kilbirnie is open 08:00–10:00 and 17:30–20:00, the Māngere Murugan temple 10:00–13:00 and 18:00–21:00 — so a midday visit often finds the doors closed. Hours change on festival days, so check the temple’s page the day before.
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November and is not a public holiday in New Zealand, so the celebrations fall on the weekends around it. The free BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival is on Aotea Square on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, 12pm to 9pm, with fireworks from about 8:50pm. Wellington’s free Diwali Festival of Lights is on Sunday 25 October, 2pm to 8:30pm, at TSB Arena and Shed 6 on the waterfront, with fireworks at 8:50pm, and the Dunedin Indian Association’s Diwali is on Sunday 1 November, 2pm to 8pm, at the Edgar Centre. ISKCON Kumeu offers deep daan daily at 07:15 and 19:15 from 27 October to 24 November. The temples’ own pujas, Annakut at the BAPS mandirs and Bandi Chhor Divas at the gurdwaras are announced by each place; when we read their sites on 23 October none of Bharatiya Mandir, the Māngere and Ōtāhuhu Murugan temples, the Onehunga Sai temple, the Henderson Ram Mandir or the Hanuman Mandir had posted a Diwali programme. Guru Nanak’s Gurpurab, around 24 November in 2026, is kept at every gurdwara with kirtan and langar.
Finding a pandit: for a house puja, naming ceremony or wedding, the Gita Mandir in Kilbirnie has a full-time pandit, the Shri Ram Mandir in Henderson takes pooja and hall bookings through its priest, and the Sri Ganesha Temple in Papakura hosts weddings. The Hindu Council of New Zealand (hcnz.org), whose other registered names include the Hindu Organisations Temples and Associations Forum, is the national body. Parking is published for few places: the Auckland Indian Association’s Mahatma Gandhi Centre says its halls have parking for up to 130 cars, and the Takanini gurdwara stands on 3.5 hectares. Elsewhere allow extra time on festival days.
Where the list is thin: Christchurch has one confirmed Hindu temple beside ISKCON, whose last coverage we found is from 2018; the Sri Ganesha Trust is planning a larger temple at Templeton, and until then worships at a home shrine, so no address is listed. Palmerston North and Dunedin have a gurdwara and no Hindu temple building we could confirm: the Manawatu Hindu Society aims to build one, and a Krishanbalram Mandir Dunedin Charitable Trust was registered in November 2024. BAPS also has a mandir in Rotorua, but we could not find an address for it.
Not listed because we could not confirm them from more than one listing or from a page of their own: Shiv Mandir in Manurewa, Shree Ambe Maa Mandir in Avondale, the Ram Krishn Mandir and Vishwa Shanti Ashram in Papatoetoe, ISKCON Panmure, the Thiru Murugan temple in Mount Wellington, the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre at 27 Arawa Street in New Lynn (which publishes online satsangs rather than visiting hours), the Ravidass gurdwara in Hastings, the Whangārei gurdwara, a second Palmerston North address at 7 Amesbury Street and the Linwood gurdwara in Christchurch. We found no Jain temple building. Several gurdwara addresses above come from community directories rather than the gurdwara’s own site, so ring or check the Facebook page before you travel.
