Hindu temples, gurdwaras and the Kobe Jain temple in Japan
Japan has no large purpose-built mandir: its Indian places of worship are small centres in ordinary buildings. In Tokyo the main Hindu temple is ISKCON New Gaya at Funabori in Edogawa, open daily, with a Shirdi Sai centre in Shinjuku and a BAPS Swaminarayan mandir; the only two gurdwaras we could confirm are Guru Nanak Darbar in Bunkyo, Tokyo, and the one in Kobe. Kobe also has the Mahavir Swami Jain Temple, open since 1985, and Osaka has an ISKCON centre. We could not confirm a mandir in Nishi-Kasai, Yokohama or Kyoto.
Tokyo
Correct or addTokyo has the most Indian residents in Japan (20,003 on the register of 1 January 2026), but none of its places of worship is a purpose-built temple: a three-storey ISKCON house, a gurdwara in a basement, a Sai Baba centre in a ground-floor unit and a ground-floor mandir. Nishi-Kasai, the Indian neighbourhood, has no mandir that we could confirm; the nearest place of worship is ISKCON at Funabori, in the same ward.

- Address
- 3-5-4 Otsuka, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 112-0012 (Myogadani Heights, basement) · Directions
- When
- No hours published — ring or ask before a first visit
Tokyo’s gurdwara, run by volunteers in a basement in the Myogadani district since 2001; the community met in Indian restaurants from 1998 before that. The deewan is held about once a month, usually on a Sunday, with a free meal for everyone; in 2016 about 70 people came on festival days and 35 to 50 on ordinary ones. The street address is from the World Gurudwaras directory and the gurdwara’s own website did not load on 31 October 2026, so ask NPO Guru Nanak Darbar Tokyo, which the Embassy of India lists, for the next date.

- When
- First and third Saturday of every month, 12:00–14:00
A Sai Baba centre in a ground-floor unit with no sign outside: the site asks visitors to come only in opening hours, take their shoes off, keep quiet and not to ask neighbours or the building’s staff for directions. Nobody there speaks English, so write ahead; Takadanobaba station is about ten minutes on foot and Nishiwaseda (Fukutoshin Line) about eight.
- HinduBAPS
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Tokyo
- Address
- Tokyo — the venue moves; see below
- When
- No hours published — ring or ask before a first visit
Listed in BAPS’s Asia-Pacific network, with the ground floor of a Tokyo building given over to the mandir; BAPS reported more than 120 devotees from Tokyo, Kobe, Kofu, Kyoto, Osaka and Yokohama at the Vedic consecration rituals, the Tokyo ceremony on 31 March 2018. BAPS publishes no street address or sabha times for it on the pages we could read, so ask BAPS through its Asia-Pacific page before going; its weekly satsang sabha is on Sundays at BAPS centres worldwide.
Kanagawa and Yokohama
Correct or addYokohama had one of Japan’s earliest Indian trading communities, many of whom moved to Kobe after the 1923 earthquake, and Kanagawa now has 7,946 Indian residents (end-2025). We could not confirm a mandir or gurdwara in Yokohama itself; its Marathi association, the Yokohama Mandal, held a three-day Ganeshotsav with a procession in 2024, in a hall rather than a temple.
- HinduRamakrishna Vedanta

- Address
- Kugi 4-18-1, Zushi, Kanagawa 249-0001 · Directions
- When
- No hours published — ring or ask before a first visit
The Zushi centre of a branch of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, on the Embassy of India’s list: study classes (in Japanese) on the Bhagavad Gita and the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, a monthly retreat, and the Kali Puja on Sunday 8 November 2026 from 18:30 to 21:00 in its Annexe — reservations are closed because all seats are taken, but it is livestreamed from 18:30. The address is from the register of religious corporations, so confirm with the Society before a first visit; there is no car park.
Kobe
Correct or addKobe was the centre of Japan’s Indian community until about 1990 — the India Club dates from 1904 — and it has the Jain temple and the older of Japan’s two gurdwaras. Hyogo prefecture has 1,794 Indian residents, fewer than Osaka, but Kobe has more places of worship. We could not confirm a Hindu mandir in Kobe.

- Address
- 2-1-15 Nozaki-dori, Chuo-ku, Kobe 651-0054 · Directions
- When
- No hours published — ring or ask before a first visit
Japan’s older gurdwara, “established in 1966” on its own Facebook page, in a house on a residential street east of Sannomiya. Kobe Shimbun described a Sunday service around midday in 2017 — about an hour of kirtan and prayer in Punjabi, then a shared meal of bean curry, chapati and yoghurt downstairs and karah prashad; no hours are published, so ask through the page. The house number is from the World Gurudwaras directory.

Bhagwan Mahavir Swami Jain Temple (Kobe Jain Temple)
- Address
- 3-7-5 Kitano-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe 650-0002 · Directions
- When
- No hours published — ring or ask before a first visit
Opened on 1 June 1985 in the Kitano district and run by the Jain Sangh of Kobe, a trust of local Indian business families; the Mahavir murti was flown in from Mumbai in 1984. Shoes come off at the entrance, visitors can sit and meditate upstairs, and free booklets in English and Japanese are by the door; no opening hours are published, so ask the Sangh before you go.
Osaka and Kyoto
Correct or addOsaka has 2,158 Indian residents (end-2025) and Kyoto fewer, but neither has a mandir, gurdwara or Jain temple that we could confirm; the nearest in Kansai are in Kobe. The Consulate General of India in Osaka-Kobe serves the region.
- HinduISKCON
ISKCON Osaka
- Address
- 1-1-17 Katamachi, Miyakojima-ku, Osaka 534-0025 · Directions
- When
- Picnic kirtan on the third Sunday of each month, 13:00–16:00, at Senri Minami Park in Suita (next: Sunday 15 November 2026)
ISKCON Japan lists the centre at the Katamachi address, but the centre’s own site (in Japanese) gives no street address or temple hours, only the monthly kirtan behind the park’s open-air stage, festivals such as Janmashtami in the same park and a LINE contact — message before going. In rain the kirtan moves under a tent on the park’s round plaza.
Also worth knowing
Japan has no purpose-built Hindu temple or gurdwara that we could confirm. The places above are rooms in ordinary buildings, most open for a few hours a week or a day a month, so check the site or write ahead; the Tokyo gurdwara and the BAPS mandir publish no current hours. Japan had 58,999 Indian nationals at the end of 2025 (Immigration Services Agency), 21,224 of them in Tokyo prefecture.
Festivals in 2026: Diwali is Sunday 8 November and is not a public holiday in Japan. The community’s own festival, Diwali Festa Nishikasai, is the day before, Saturday 7 November, 10:00–16:30 at Takino Park, Nakakasai 3-22-1, Edogawa (free, no registration). Guru Nanak’s birthday is Tuesday 24 November; neither gurdwara had published a programme by 31 October. Navratri ran from 11 to 19 October with Dussehra on 20 October, and Holi was on 4 March; the next Holi is Monday 22 March 2027, with Holika Dahan the evening before. We found no temple in Japan that publishes a Holi or Navratri programme: the regional associations run those.
Dress and manners: shoes come off at the door (the Shirdi Sai centre and the Kobe Jain temple say so, and gurdwaras and ISKCON temples follow the same custom), cover your head in a gurdwara, and dress modestly everywhere. At a centre in an ordinary building, which is most of them, keep your voice down on the stairs and in the street, do not ask neighbours for directions (the Shirdi Sai centre asks this in so many words) and do not expect parking: the Vedanta Society and the Shirdi Sai centre both say there is none.
Many pujas in Japan are held in community halls, parks and homes, not in temples, so the groups are the way in. Nihon Kairali held its Onam at Kasai Civic Hall in Edogawa on 12 September 2026, and the Embassy of India lists 59 recognised associations, among them Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayali, Marathi, Bengali, Odia, Rajasthani and Uttarakhandi groups and NPO Guru Nanak Darbar Tokyo; the Tokyo and Japan events pages carry what is posted.
For a priest: ISKCON Funabori is the one place we found that publishes rates for Vedic rituals by qualified priests, in 2026 from ¥15,000 for a new-vehicle puja or a puja for departed ones to ¥35,000 for a naming ceremony, ¥51,000 for a new-home puja and ¥111,000 for a wedding, booked through the form on its site. For other traditions ask the BAPS mandir or your regional association.
Not listed because we could not confirm them: a Shiva Shakti Mandir in Okubo, Shinjuku, which appears in lists of Hindu temples in Japan but has no site, register entry or recent news we could find; a small Jain derasar in Higashi-Ueno, Taito ward, which directories record but whose Tokyo Jain Sangh blog has no post after June 2019; and a Hindu mandir of the Indian Social Society in Kobe, which one online guide mentions and nothing else does.
Questions people ask
- Is there a Hindu temple in Tokyo?
- Yes. ISKCON New Gaya at 2-23-4 Funabori in Edogawa is open daily, Monday to Saturday 08:00–13:00 and 16:30–21:00 and on Sundays 08:00–15:00 and 16:30–21:00, with a free Sunday programme. There is also the Shirdi Sai Baba Tokyo Center in Shinjuku (first and third Saturday, 12:00–14:00) and a BAPS Swaminarayan mandir that publishes no address.
- Is there a Hindu temple in Nishi-Kasai?
- Not one that we could confirm. Nishi-Kasai has the Indian groceries, restaurants and schools and hosts Diwali Festa Nishikasai, but the nearest place of worship is ISKCON at Funabori, also in Edogawa ward.
- Where is the gurdwara in Tokyo?
- Guru Nanak Darbar Tokyo is in a basement at 3-5-4 Otsuka, Bunkyo-ku, in the Myogadani district, according to the World Gurudwaras directory. It holds a deewan about once a month, usually on a Sunday, with a free meal; ask NPO Guru Nanak Darbar Tokyo for the date.
- Is there a gurdwara in Kobe?
- Yes. Guru Nanak Darbar Sahib, set up in 1966, is on Nozaki-dori in Chuo-ku, east of Sannomiya. Kobe Shimbun described a Sunday service around midday with a shared meal afterwards in 2017, and the gurdwara’s Facebook page is the way to ask for current times.
- Is there a Jain temple in Japan?
- The Bhagwan Mahavir Swami Jain Temple at 3-7-5 Kitano-cho in Kobe, opened on 1 June 1985 and run by the Jain Sangh of Kobe, is the one we could confirm. We could not confirm that a small derasar recorded in Tokyo’s Taito ward is still in use.
- Is there a Hindu temple in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe or Yokohama?
- None that we could confirm. Osaka has an ISKCON centre whose monthly kirtan is on the third Sunday in Senri Minami Park, Suita; the Vedanta Society of Japan has a centre at Zushi in Kanagawa; and BAPS devotees from Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Yokohama took part in the consecration of the Tokyo mandir.
- Where can I celebrate Diwali in Japan in 2026?
- Diwali is Sunday 8 November. Diwali Festa Nishikasai is on Saturday 7 November, 10:00–16:30, at Takino Park in Edogawa, free with no registration; the Vedanta Society of Japan holds a Kali Puja in Zushi on 8 November from 18:30, full but livestreamed; and ISKCON Funabori is keeping Kartik until 24 November. Diwali is not a public holiday.
- When is Guru Nanak’s birthday in 2026?
- Tuesday 24 November 2026, the full moon of Kartik. Japan’s two gurdwaras, in Tokyo and Kobe, had not published a programme by 31 October, so ask them nearer the date.
- How do I find a priest for a puja in Japan?
- ISKCON Funabori publishes a price list for rituals by qualified priests, from a new-vehicle puja at ¥15,000 to a wedding at ¥111,000, and takes bookings through its site. Otherwise ask the BAPS mandir or your regional association.
