Hindu temples and gurdwaras in Spain

The Hindu temples we could confirm in Spain are ISKCON’s Templo Hare Krishna at Plaça Reial 12 in Barcelona (free Sunday programme, 17:30–20:30), ISKCON Madrid at Calle del Espíritu Santo 19, the Hindu temple of Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol, and the Sindhi community’s temples in Ceuta (Calle Echegaray) and Melilla (Calle Padre Lerchundi). The Punjabi Sikh gurdwaras are mostly in Catalonia — the Raval (Carrer de l’Hospital 97), L’Hospitalet, Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Vic, Salt and Lloret de Mar — with others in Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Palma and Murcia. We found no Jain temple.

Barcelona and its metropolitan area

Correct or add

Catalonia holds more than half of Spain’s Indian nationals with residence papers (32,415 on 30 June 2026, Ministry of Inclusion), many of them Punjabi Sikhs, and the gurdwaras follow them: the Raval, L’Hospitalet, Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Viladecans. The one Hindu temple with a page of its own is ISKCON’s.

The Canary Islands

Correct or add

The islands hold Spain’s oldest Indian community, Sindhi traders who settled in the free ports from the late nineteenth century. Las Palmas province has 2,549 Indian nationals with residence papers and Santa Cruz de Tenerife 1,679 (30 June 2026), and many island families are Spanish citizens and in no foreigner count. The Sindhi families’ own temples in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are not listed below: we could not confirm an address for any of them on a current public page.

Ceuta

The Comunidad Hindú de Ceuta, approved in 1948 as the first Hindu association in Spain, keeps the city’s temple. Its families came from Sindh: the community’s president says the first Hindus settled in Ceuta in 1892, and more came after the partition of India in 1947.

    A small room of about 40 square metres, which the community moved to provisionally from its larger premises on Calle Castelar (the register still lists Castelar 12 and 14); it has about a hundred members, and the city’s 2026 agreement with the community funds talks, workshops and guided visits to the temple. In 2024 the community said its yoga, meditation and workshops had moved to La Salle for lack of space; Diwali is kept in the Plaza de las Culturas.

Andalusia: Málaga, Benalmádena and Mijas

Andalusia has 3,061 Indian nationals with residence papers, 1,678 of them in Málaga province (30 June 2026). We found no temple or gurdwara listed in Marbella or Torremolinos.

Also worth knowing

Spain has no single list of places of worship. This page starts from the Ministry of Justice’s register of religious entities, as republished by the Observatorio del Pluralismo Religioso’s directory of places of worship, and adds what each place or ISKCON Spain publishes itself. A registered address is a legal domicile: several gurdwaras are in ground-floor units, flats or industrial units, and a few are listed at more than one address, which the entries say. Most places publish no hours. Many smaller places of worship in rented premises are not registered or listed here, and we found no Jain temple in Spain.

The Federación Hindú de España is the national umbrella body for Hindu associations and temples; the Ministry of Justice received it as the interlocutor for Hinduism in January 2017. It publishes no list of member temples that we could find. We found no national Sikh federation; in Barcelona the city council’s religious-affairs office works with the association of the Raval gurdwara, Guru Darshan Sahib, on the annual nagar kirtan. For a pandit for a puja, naming or wedding, or a granthi for a Sikh ceremony, ask at the nearest temple or gurdwara.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 and is not a public holiday in Spain: the Labour Ministry’s list of fiestas laborales for 2026 has no Indian festival. Gurdwaras keep the same night as Bandi Chhor Divas. ISKCON Barcelona’s free Sunday programme (17:30–20:30) falls on Diwali itself; Ceuta lights its streets from the Plaza de los Reyes to the temple, and Melilla gathers in the Plaza de las Culturas. None had published a 2026 programme that we could find by 31 October. Guru Nanak’s birthday is Tuesday 24 November 2026 (Embassy of India, Madrid); Barcelona’s nagar kirtan for it ran on Sunday 20 November in 2022, and we found no 2026 date. Vaisakhi falls in mid-April, so 2026 has passed; Wikipedia names Vic, Lloret de Mar and Badalona among the towns that hold public nagar kirtan processions, and we found no published date for one in Barcelona.

At a gurdwara take off your shoes, cover your head — a scarf or handkerchief is enough — and sit on the floor facing the Guru Granth Sahib; Nanaksar Madrid’s own rules also keep alcohol, tobacco and meat out. Langar is a free vegetarian meal for everyone, and Nanaksar Madrid serves it every Sunday. In Hindu temples remove your shoes and dress modestly; ISKCON’s centres are vegetarian, and Barcelona and Málaga serve prasadam to visitors on Sundays.

Ceuta and Melilla have the oldest public Hindu temples, kept by Sindhi families who settled there from the 1890s. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife the island Comunidades Indostánicas hold the Diwali galas (Las Palmas on 18 October 2025) but we could not confirm a temple address on a current public page, and the register has no Hindu entry in Las Palmas province; ask the community directly.

Is there a Hindu temple in Barcelona?
Yes: ISKCON’s Templo Hare Krishna at Plaça Reial 12, near the Rambla. It holds a free programme every Sunday from 17:30 to 20:30 (kirtan, a Bhagavad Gita class, arati and a vegetarian meal) and a morning programme at 07:00. A Nepali Hindu temple is registered at Carrer de Còrsega 545, and the Punjabi Sikh community has gurdwaras in the Raval, L’Hospitalet, Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
Where are the gurdwaras in Barcelona?
The one in the city is Gurdwara Gurdarshan Sahib at Carrer de l’Hospital 97 in the Raval. Others are in the metropolitan area: Nanaksar at Carrer de Rafael Campalans 26 in L’Hospitalet, Gursangat Sahib at Carrer de Ramon Llull 5 in Badalona, two in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and one in Viladecans. Vic, Salt, Lloret de Mar, Olot and Tarragona have their own.
Is there a Hindu temple or gurdwara in Madrid?
ISKCON Madrid is at Calle del Espíritu Santo 19 (Sunday feast 12:00–16:00), and Madrid’s tourism board lists the Sindhi Jhulelal temple on Calle Federico Moreno Torroba in Retiro. The gurdwaras are Nanaksar at Calle Ciudad de Frías 25 in Villaverde Alto (langar every Sunday) and a Singh Sabha gurdwara registered at Calle de Mamerto López 61.
Is there a Hindu temple in Ceuta or Melilla?
Both have one, kept by the Sindhi community. Ceuta’s Templo Hindú is on Calle Echegaray and opened on 22 October 2007; Melilla’s is at Calle Padre Lerchundi 18, a small room the community moved to from Calle Castelar. Neither publishes regular hours; the communities announce festival programmes close to the date.
Where are the Hindu temples in the Canary Islands and on the Costa del Sol?
In Tenerife, ISKCON Tenerife at Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina 32 in Playa de las Américas holds a free Sunday programme from 18:00 to 21:00, and the Centro Védico Hindú Jagannath is in El Médano. On the Costa del Sol there is the Hindu Temple of Benalmádena on Avenida Gandhi and ISKCON Málaga at Carretera de Álora 1-A in Churriana. We could not confirm a Sindhi temple address in Las Palmas or Santa Cruz.
Is Diwali a public holiday in Spain, and when is Bandi Chhor Divas in 2026?
No. Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026 and the Labour Ministry’s list of fiestas laborales for 2026 has no Indian festival. Gurdwaras keep Bandi Chhor Divas the same night, and ISKCON Barcelona’s free Sunday programme runs from 17:30 to 20:30 that day; ask each place for its own programme.
When is Guru Nanak’s birthday in 2026, and is there a nagar kirtan in Barcelona?
Guru Nanak’s birthday is Tuesday 24 November 2026. The Raval gurdwara’s association organises Barcelona’s nagar kirtan around it; in 2022 it ran on a Sunday from 10:30 to 16:15 from the Rambla del Raval to the Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies. We found no published date for 2026, so ask the gurdwara.
What should I wear and do at a gurdwara in Spain?
Take off your shoes, cover your head with a scarf or handkerchief, sit on the floor facing the Guru Granth Sahib and leave alcohol, tobacco and meat outside. Anyone may eat the free vegetarian langar. Visitors of every faith are welcome.
Is there a Jain temple in Spain?
We found none: no Jain place of worship appears in the Ministry of Justice’s register or in any other source we checked.
