Hindu temples and gurdwaras in Portugal

Portugal’s main Hindu temple is the Templo Radha Krishna of the Comunidade Hindu de Portugal on Alameda Mahatma Gandhi in Lumiar, Lisbon, with daily programmes from 08:00 to 10:30 and from 18:00 to 20:30. Lisbon also has the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir on Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho and an ISKCON centre, and the Shiv Mandir is in Santo António dos Cavaleiros, Loures. The Sikh temple for the Lisbon area is the gurdwara on Rua José Duarte Lexim in Odivelas; gurdwaras are also listed in Porto and Albufeira, and ISKCON has a centre in Porto.

It runs the city’s Ratha Yatra with the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and a Food for Life meal programme.

The Sikh temple for the Lisbon area, which the Câmara Municipal de Odivelas calls the Templo de Gurdwara Sikh; the municipality reported hundreds of worshippers, with the Indian ambassador and municipal officials, at its celebrations of Guru Nanak’s birthday in November 2019 and November 2024. No website, diwan or langar times are published, and the name and lot number come from gurdwara directories, so ask in the community before you go.

We could not confirm a Hindu mandir in the Porto area; the Comunidade Hindu counts members there, but its temple is in Lisbon.

The Algarve’s Sikh temple, which a DN report of May 2022 on Sikh workers in Odemira put 82 km from them. Directories give its postcode three ways and no timetable, and it has no page of its own that we found, so confirm the address and the day’s programme before you travel.

Also worth knowing

The Comunidade Hindu de Portugal says it grew from 1975 as families left Mozambique, was constituted in 1982 and counts about 9,000 members in the Lisbon and Porto areas, most from Mozambique and some from the Gujarat territories of Portuguese India. The list is short because the temples are few, and several run from rented or temporary premises: ISKCON Lisboa rents its centre and the Shiva temple’s permanent building has not been built.

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026 and is not a public holiday in Portugal. The Templo Radha Krishna publishes the same evening programme every day, 18:00–20:30 with aarti at 19:30, and no separate Diwali timetable had been published by 31 October, so check its agenda page; the Comunidade’s Diwali Show follows on Sunday 29 November, 17:00–20:30, at the Aula Magna of the Reitoria in Lisbon. Navratri 2026 ran from 11 to 19 October, with the Comunidade’s Navratri “Dairo” evenings, and in 2027 it is 30 September to 8 October; Holi is on Monday 22 March 2027. For Sikhs, Guru Nanak’s birthday is Tuesday 24 November 2026 and Vaisakhi is Wednesday 14 April 2027; we found no published 2026 programme or nagar kirtan for any Portuguese gurdwara, so ask the community.

Take your shoes off before entering a mandir or a gurdwara and dress modestly. In a gurdwara everyone covers their head, usually with a scarf kept at the door, and sits on the floor. Langar, the free vegetarian meal, is served to everyone at a gurdwara; none of the Portuguese gurdwaras publishes its langar times, so ask when you arrive. The Comunidade Hindu’s Cantina Indiana is a restaurant, not langar.

For a house puja, a naming ceremony or a wedding, the temples are the place to ask: the Templo Radha Krishna’s secretariat (Monday to Friday, 09:00–18:00), the Shiv Mandir or the BAPS mandir. The Comunidade also teaches Gujarati, gives Portuguese lessons to migrants and helps them with the legal formalities.

Not listed. In Odemira, DN reported in May 2022 that Sikh workers met every Sunday in a rented hall in the town, and a business register records an Associação Comunidade Sikh Odemira under the name Guru Nanak Darbar in the parish of São Teotónio, but we found no address, hours or later report; Albufeira is the nearest gurdwara we could confirm. We found nothing in Madeira, no Jain temple, no Sathya Sai centre and no Sikh umbrella body, and a Ravidass sabha that one directory places in Lisbon has an incomplete address and no other source. Casa de Goa is a Goan cultural association and the Ismaili Centre on Avenida Lusíada belongs to another tradition; neither is a temple in this list, and nor are the prayer groups in rented rooms where many newer arrivals worship.

On 8 June 2025 police detained the leader of a far-right group during a demonstration on Rua José Duarte Lexim, where the Odivelas temple stands (DN, Correio da Manhã). On 9 October 2026 the Embassy of India said it had been informed of “targeted vilification and discrimination” against people of Indian origin that led to an altercation at the Odivelas gurdwara on 4 October 2026; we found no police or press account of that event. If you meet abuse, report it to the police (112 in an emergency) and tell the Embassy.

Is there a gurdwara in the Algarve or the Alentejo?
The Algarve has the Gurdwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji in Albufeira. In Odemira, in the Alentejo, DN reported in May 2022 that Sikh workers met every Sunday in a rented hall; we could not confirm a gurdwara there today, and DN put the Albufeira temple 82 km away.
Is there a Jain temple in Portugal?
We found none: no Jain temple, centre or association in Portugal turned up in our searches, so none is listed.
Is Diwali a public holiday in Portugal, and what do the temples do?
No. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, a rest day for most people. The Templo Radha Krishna keeps its usual evening programme from 18:00 to 20:30 and had published no separate Diwali timetable by 31 October; its Diwali Show is on Sunday 29 November at the Aula Magna in Lisbon. Gurdwaras keep Bandi Chhor Divas the same night, and Guru Nanak’s birthday is Tuesday 24 November 2026.
