Hindu temples in Mauritius
The Maheswarnath Mandir in Triolet, founded in 1888, is called the largest Hindu temple on the island, and the Sockalingum Meenatchee Ammen Kovil (Kaylasson) in Sainte Croix, north of Port Louis, is called the oldest Tamil temple; the Siva Subramanya Temple, Kovil Montagne, is on the Corps de Garde mountain in Quatre Bornes. The pilgrimage site is Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) in the south, with a 33 m statue of Shiva at its entrance, and the Sagar Shiv Mandir stands on an islet at Poste de Flacq. ISKCON has five centres, in Phoenix, Pamplemousses, Fond du Sac, Bon Accueil (Flacq) and Rose Belle. We could not confirm a working gurdwara for this page.
The centre: Quatre Bornes, Vacoas-Phoenix and Curepipe
Correct or addPlaines Wilhems has more Hindus than any other district (149,521 at the 2022 census, 43.9% of its residents), and the Metro Express runs through Quatre Bornes, Phoenix, Vacoas and Curepipe. We could not confirm another kovil or mandir with an address and a source in Rose Hill, Beau Bassin or Curepipe, so this list is short; ask at the places below.

A Murugan temple on the slopes of Corps de Garde, begun around 1897 by the indentured labourer Velamurugan, who bought half an acre of mountain land for Rs 30. The Hindoo Tamulall Siva Soopramanien Benevolent Society runs it, and has run the Mariamman temple at Berthaud, Quatre Bornes, since 1946; Mauritian travel listings call it a pilgrimage site at Thaipoosam Cavadee. We found no current timetable: Kaumaram.com lists 05:30–06:30 and 17:30–19:00, travel guides give 05:00–18:00, and the temple’s old website now redirects to Facebook.

A smaller black-stone Panchamukhi Hanuman statue stands on the site. We found no street address and no published hours.
Port Louis
Correct or addPort Louis district is 19.5% Hindu and 40.9% Muslim (2022 census), so the Hindu places lie more in the suburbs and the towns around it than in the centre. The Arya Sabha Mauritius has its headquarters in the city, but we could not confirm a temple address for it (see the notes).

Described by Lonely Planet’s French guide as the oldest Tamil temple on the island: 27 Tamil businessmen bought the 13-acre site in 1854 (Onmanorama) and Mautourco dates its consecration to 1860. Shiva and Parvati are worshipped as Sockalingum and Meenakshi Amman in a Dravidian temple that a priest says follows Madurai’s Meenakshi temple, and the temple runs Tamil classes for children. Le Mauricien’s 2023 account of Cavadee names it as a starting point for processions. No street number or timetable is published; a 1989 reference gives Nicolay Road.
The north: Triolet, Goodlands and Pamplemousses

Also worth knowing
This page lists only the temples we could confirm with an address or a locality and a named source. The Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation alone has more than a hundred kovils registered, so most village shivalas, kovils and baitkas are not here. Mautourco’s guide names older ones with no address or timetable: Bon Espoir Piton (1830), Sinatambou Kovil at Terre Rouge (1850), Murugan Kovil at Clemencia (1856), a shivala at Gokoolah (1867), Rameshwarnath Shivala at Terre Rouge (1867) and Jharnath Shivala at Adventure (1881) — ask locally before you go.
Umbrella bodies: the Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation (founded 1957) coordinates the kovils and passes on a government grant, and published a prayer booklet for Thaipoosam Cavadee 2018 (Le Mauricien, October 2023). The Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation is the body L’Express quoted in February 2026 on the Maha Shivaratree rules, through its president, Bhojraj Ghoorbin. The Arya Sabha Mauritius, the Arya Samaj body, runs prayer halls (baitkas), Hindi classes and DAV colleges and trains pandits; Le Mauricien (2017) says the Dayanand Dharamshala at Champ de Mars in Port Louis became the Arya Samaj’s permanent seat during the First World War, but the Sabha’s old website no longer serves it and we could not confirm a temple address.
Maha Shivaratree falls on Saturday 6 March 2027 in the calendars we found; the Prime Minister’s Office had not published its 2027 list. The walk to Grand Bassin starts days earlier, and in 2026 (15 February) about 350,000 devotees were expected, kanwars were limited to 3 m by 2 m by 5.5 m, generators were banned and a breach could cost a fine of up to Rs 10,000. Police, health services and councils concentrated on La Marie, Plaine-Sophie, Pétrin and the lake, with temporary medical centres, and the National Transport Corporation ran buses day and night; expect closed roads and heavy traffic in the south-west.
Thaipoosam Cavadee is expected around 22 or 23 January 2027 (it was Sunday 1 February 2026): Tamil devotees carry a cavadee, an arch with milk pots, to the kovil after about ten days of fasting, and Kovil Montagne and the Kaylasson temple are named gathering points. Divali is a public holiday, on Sunday 8 November 2026; since the 2026–27 Budget a Sunday holiday is replaced by the following Monday, so Monday 9 November is expected to be the day off. Temples announce their Divali programmes only a few days ahead.
Take your shoes off at a Hindu place of worship, dress modestly and ask before photographing. Lonely Planet’s French guide asks visitors to Sagar Shiv Mandir to avoid very casual clothing, and Sunlife says to dress conservatively at Grand Bassin; visitors of other faiths do come to both, but at a working temple ask before you go into the sanctum. For a pandit for a house puja or ceremony, ask at the nearest temple or at the Arya Sabha, which trains pandits.
We could not confirm a gurdwara for this page. SikhiWiki and the All About Sikhs directory list a Sri Guru Singh Sabha “behind Bala Garage” in Port Louis, serving a small Sikh community, but neither is dated, the address is not a street, and we found no recent news or page from the gurdwara. Ask the Indian High Commission or Sikh families in Port Louis before travelling.

- Around 22 or 23 January 2027, expected; in 2026 it was Sunday 1 February. Tamil kovils across the island hold processions, and Kovil Montagne in Quatre Bornes and the Kaylasson temple near Port Louis are named gathering points.

All except the Pamplemousses centre list a weekly Sunday feast.
- Is there a gurdwara in Mauritius?

- How many Tamil temples are there in Mauritius?
- More than a hundred kovils are registered with the Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation, founded in 1957 (Le Mauricien, October 2023). This page lists those we could confirm; the federation is the body to ask about the rest.
