Thaipusam falls on Friday 22 January 2027 in the Cabinet Division’s 2027 schedule, as reported by HR Online, and is a state public holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Perak, Penang and Negeri Sembilan. The main places are Batu Caves, where the silver chariot arrives from the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Chinatown (about 16 km, a night and a day on the road in 2023), the Waterfall hilltop and Nattukkottai Chettiar temples in George Town, whose golden and silver chariots spent nearly 18 hours on the streets in 2026, Kallumalai in Ipoh and the Balathandayuthapani temple in Seremban. Crowds are in the hundreds of thousands, so go the day before or after; Tourism Malaysia suggests reaching Batu Caves before 08:00 on any ordinary day.
Deepavali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, a public holiday in every state except Sarawak, with Monday 9 November a replacement holiday in most states; in 2027 it falls on Thursday 28 October, marked subject to change in the official schedule. Kuala Lumpur City Hall runs a Deepavali bazaar in Brickfields from 9 October to 7 November, 10:00 to midnight,.
The Malaysia Hindu Sangam’s temple etiquette asks visitors to take off their shoes at the designated place, to stay out of the sanctum, to wear clean clothes, to avoid revealing dress and hats, and not to photograph inside unless allowed. Women are asked to wear traditional Indian dress modestly, men a shirt with long trousers or a dhoti, and black is avoided except at Ayyappan temples. We found no published dress rule from the Batu Caves management, so use the Sangam’s guidance there and for the 272 steps. At a gurdwara cover your head, take off your shoes and eat langar sitting on the floor.
For a priest or a ceremony, temple offices take bookings; Sri Kandaswamy Kovil’s office is open Monday to Friday 09:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00 and Saturday 09:00–13:00, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Malaysia Hindu Sangam has state councils, and the Penang Hindu Endowments Board manages its temples from Level 30, Komtar.
Not listed: the many small estate, roadside and neighbourhood temples (Muneeswarar, Kaliamman and Karumariamman shrines among them), which run to several hundred in Wikipedia’s list of Hindu temples in Malaysia alone, and the dozens of gurdwaras that Sikh directories list in Perak, Selangor and the north. We left out places whose street address we could not confirm: Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple in Klang (its tower is on Persiaran Raja Muda Musa), the Seafield temple in Subang Jaya (the subject of a 2018 land dispute), the Chintamani Parshvanath Jain Temple in Ipoh (consecrated in February 2002), and Gurdwara Sahib Guru Nanak Shah Alam, whose present building dates from 2015.
Hours are given only where the temple, the Penang Hindu Endowments Board, the Penang eRIBI directory or a tourism board publishes them; the rest are left blank, and festival days run to a different timetable. Several places are changing: Wadda Gurdwara Sahib in George Town reopened in September 2026, the Kota Kinabalu gurdwara’s prayer hall is being restored and Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Tin has closed.
Questions people ask

- What is the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, and where is it?
- Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at 163 Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, on the edge of Chinatown, opposite Pasar Seni LRT and MRT station. It was founded in 1873, and its silver chariot carries Murugan to Batu Caves at Thaipusam.
- Which Hindu temples are in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur?
- Sri Kandaswamy Kovil at No. 3 Jalan Tebing, which publishes its daily timetable, and Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar Temple at 199 Jalan Berhala. ISKCON’s Sri Jagannatha Mandir is not in Brickfields: it is at Lot 9901, Jalan Awan Jawa, off Old Klang Road.
- When is Thaipusam 2027, and where are the main celebrations?
- Friday 22 January 2027, a state public holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Perak, Penang and Negeri Sembilan. The main places are Batu Caves, the Waterfall hilltop and Nattukkottai Chettiar temples in George Town, the Kallumalai temple in Ipoh and the Balathandayuthapani temple in Seremban.
- Is Deepavali a public holiday in Malaysia?

- Which gurdwara in Kuala Lumpur serves langar every day?
- The Guru Nanak Darbar Tatt Khalsa Diwan at 24 Jalan Raja Alang in Chow Kit serves free vegetarian langar three times a day, with afternoon tea, to anyone, according to its vice president in April 2026. Gurdwara Sahib Titiwangsa began opening its langar to everyone three times a day in 2016.
- What are the main Hindu temples in George Town, Penang?
- The Arulmigu Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Lebuh Queen (1833), the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani hilltop temple on Jalan Air Terjun, and the Nattukkottai Chettiar Temple on Jalan Kebun Bunga. The Wadda Gurdwara Sahib at 87 Jalan Gurdwara reopened in September 2026.
- What is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia?
- The Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple at 5–11 Jalan Tukang Emas, Melaka, founded in 1781, is usually called the oldest, though Lonely Planet says only that it is among the first. The oldest in Penang is the Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Lebuh Queen, built in 1833.
- Is there a Jain temple in Malaysia?
- Yes. The Jain Temple in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur (95 Lorong Maarof, Bangsar Park), opened in 2011, and the Chintamani Parshvanath Jain Temple in First Garden, Ipoh, was consecrated in February 2002. We could confirm only the Bangsar address.
- What should I wear to a Hindu temple or gurdwara in Malaysia?
- Dress modestly in clean clothes and take your shoes off; the Malaysia Hindu Sangam suggests avoiding black, hats and revealing dress, and asks visitors to stay out of the sanctum. In a gurdwara cover your head as well.
