In Nairobi they include the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir on Prof. Wangari Maathai Road (formerly Forest Road) in Parklands, the East Africa Satsang Swaminarayan Temple on Swaminarayan Road, the Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple in Langata and ISKCON on Ngara Road; in Mombasa they include the Hindu Union’s Shiva Temple in Makadara and two Swaminarayan temples on Haile Selassie Road. Nairobi’s gurdwaras are the Siri Guru Singh Sabha on Uyoma Street and the Ramgarhia gurdwaras in Pangani and South C, and the Sikh Temple at Makindu, about 170 km down the Mombasa road, is reported to serve free langar around the clock. Also worth knowing
The Hindu Council of Kenya, founded in 1971, is the Hindu umbrella body, with branches at Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mount Kenya (Thika) and Eldoret; its member list for 2026–27 names about sixty institutions. The Shree Visa Oshwal Community is the Jain body, with the Oshwal Centre in Westlands and community centres in Mombasa and other towns. The 2019 census counted 60,287 Hindus in Kenya, 38,141 of them in Nairobi County and 6,136 in Mombasa County. The Council’s list gives no towns or streets, so it cannot place a temple for you; its Nairobi office can put you in touch with one.
Not listed because we could not place them: the Hindu Council’s list also names the Shree Hanuman Mandir, the Shree Ambajee Temple, the Shree Gurjar Suthar Vishwakarma Mandir, the Shree Jalaram Satsang Mandal, the Swaminarayan Vadtaldham temple and the Hindu Religious and Service Centre, with no town or street. Older Sikh directories list gurdwaras at Mwembe Tayari Road in Mombasa (Sri Guru Singh Sabha), in Nakuru, in Eldoret (a Sri Guru Singh Sabha of 1958 and a Ramgarhia gurdwara), on Cairo Road in Kisumu and on Mama Ngina Drive in Thika, and also a Landia gurdwara by Nairobi’s railway station; we found no current page for them, so ask a local Sikh association before travelling. Many smaller mandirs and community halls are not listed.
Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. It is not a public holiday in Kenya: at State House in October 2024 President Ruto said his government would decide on making it one by the next Diwali, and that a change would have to go to Parliament. Temples hold Lakshmi Puja on the evening and many hold Annakut the next day, and gurdwaras keep Bandi Chhor Divas that night; each sets its own times. The Hindu Council’s events page listed no event on 30 October. Fireworks need a licence from the State Department for Mining, and no 2026 notice had been found. Navratri ran from 11 to 19 October 2026 and the next begins on 30 September 2027. Guru Nanak’s Gurpurab is Tuesday 24 November 2026.
Cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off at the door and ask before photographing inside; cover your head in a gurdwara (scarves are usually available), and in a Jain temple leave leather items outside. Visitors of every faith are welcome at the Sunday programmes, which are the easiest first visit. The UK government’s advice names places of worship among places that could be targeted in Kenya, including at religious events and celebrations, and recommends varying your routine, going in daylight where you can and noting the bag searches and guards, so expect checks at the larger Nairobi temples.
In Nairobi, parking near the Parklands temples is tight on festival evenings, so share a lift or book a ride and agree a pick-up point afterwards; the Pangani gurdwara has parking for over 250 cars. For a pandit for a house puja, a naming ceremony or a wedding, ask at your community’s temple or samaj, or at the Hindu Council. Outside Nairobi and Mombasa this list is thin: for Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret and Thika, several entries have no street, and the Hindu Council branch for your town is the first call to make.
Questions people ask
- Where is the Hindu temple in Nairobi?
- The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is on Prof. Wangari Maathai Road, formerly Forest Road, in Parklands; BAPS gives visiting hours of 08:00–12:00 and 16:00–20:00. - Is there an ISKCON temple in Kenya?
- Yes. ISKCON Nairobi (Sri Sri Radha Bankebihari Mandir) is on Ngara Road and runs Sunday classes for children and youth from 12:30 to 14:00. ISKCON Mombasa’s New Dwarikadham Temple is in Nyali, and ISKCON’s directory also lists a centre in Kisumu.

- Yes, three. The Siri Guru Singh Sabha on Uyoma Street in the centre opened its present building in November 1963 and holds a diwan on Sundays; the Ramgarhia gurdwaras are in Pangani and South C. None publishes a timetable, so ring ahead.
- Is the langar at Makindu Sikh Temple free?
- Yes. The gurdwara, about 170 km from Nairobi on the Mombasa road, serves free langar to travellers of any faith, reported as running around the clock, and The Review of Religions says it offers free lodging for two nights; donations are voluntary. It publishes no timetable or booking system, so treat the two-night limit as unconfirmed.
- Where are the Hindu and Jain temples in Mombasa?
- The Hindu Union’s Shiva Temple is in Makadara; the Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple and the BAPS mandir are both on Haile Selassie Road; ISKCON’s New Dwarikadham Temple is in Nyali. The Jain derasar of the Shree Swetamber Derawasi Jain Sangh, consecrated in 1963, is in the Old Town between Digo Road and Langoni Road.

- Yes. The Visa Oshwal Community’s Munisuvrat Jinalaya on Limuru Road was consecrated in February 1984. The older Jainshala Derasar, Nairobi’s first Jain temple, was closed in February 2021 and its murtis moved to Limuru Road. Kenya also has derasars in Mombasa, Nakuru and Thika.
- Is there a Hindu temple in Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret or Thika?
- Yes. Kisumu has a BAPS mandir on Okore Road and a Swaminarayan mandir; Nakuru has BAPS on Masaai Avenue and a Visa Oshwal Jain temple; Eldoret has BAPS on Tagore Road and a Swaminarayan mandir on Ramogi Drive; Thika has the Shree Hindu Sanatan Dharama Mandir (1945), a BAPS mandir opened in May 2022 and a Jain derasar.
- Is Diwali a public holiday in Kenya, and when is Diwali 2026?
- No. Diwali 2026 is Sunday 8 November, and it is not a Kenyan public holiday: President Ruto said at State House in October 2024 that his government would decide on making it one and that a change would have to go to Parliament. The Hindu Council of Kenya had no event listed on 30 October, so ask your temple for its programme.
- What is the Hindu Council of Kenya?
- It is the umbrella body for Hindu organisations, founded in 1971, with an office in Nairobi and branches in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Thika (Mount Kenya) and Eldoret. Its 2026–27 member list names about sixty temples, samajs and associations, but gives no addresses.
- How do I find a pandit in Kenya?
- Ask at the temple or samaj of your community, such as the BAPS or Swaminarayan temples for Gujarati families, or at the Hindu Council’s Nairobi office, which lists its member bodies. Temples announce their own programmes a few weeks ahead.
