Hindu temples, gurdwaras and Jain temples in Australia

Australia’s Hindu temples are mostly in the capital cities. In Sydney the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Helensburgh, Sri Mandir at Auburn (the country’s first, from 1977), the Sydney Murugan Temple at Mays Hill and the BAPS mandir at Rosehill are the main ones; in Melbourne they are the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple at Carrum Downs, Sri Vakrathunda Vinayagar at The Basin and the BAPS mandir at Mill Park. The main gurdwaras are at Glenwood in Sydney and Keysborough, Blackburn and Craigieburn in Melbourne, and the historic Sikh temples are at Woolgoolga on the New South Wales north coast. ISKCON has temples in North Sydney, Albert Park, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra, and farm temples near Murwillumbah and in the Hunter Valley.

Also worth knowing

Visiting: take your shoes off at the door and dress modestly. In a gurdwara cover your head and sit on the floor; langar, the free vegetarian meal, is open to everyone. Most temples open in a morning and an evening session with a gap between, so a midday visit often finds the doors closed.

Finding a pandit: for a house puja, naming ceremony or wedding, ask at one of the larger mandirs above — the Shiva Vishnu Temple at Carrum Downs takes pooja bookings online and the Mawson mandir in Canberra offers priest services. The Hindu Council of Australia also lists Hindu marriage celebrants and chaplains.

Festival days: Navarathri, Vijayadasami, Diwali and Maha Shivaratri bring crowds and changed hours (the Carrum Downs temple’s own calendar marks Navarathiri on 11–20 October 2026), so check the temple’s page the day before you go.

Not listed because we could not confirm a street address: the BAPS mandirs at Kingston (Brisbane), Claremont (Hobart), Cairns, Cardiff (Newcastle) and Griffith, and BAPS Perth (directories give both Double View and Wangara); the Shree Jagannath Temple at Castle Hill, consecrated in March 2026; the Ram Krishna Temple at Austral; Shri Sai Mandir at Strathfield South; the Gayatri Mandir at Boondall; Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir at North Maclean; Shreenath Dham Haveli in Perth; the Adelaide Shirdi Saibaba Temple at Waterloo Corner; the Canberra Arupadai Murugan Temple at Torrens; Sri Venkata Krishna Brundavana at Murrumbeena; Mata Chintapurni Mandir at St Albans; and the ISSO mandir at Derrimut.

Jain temples: the Melbourne Shwetamber Jain Sangh is building a marble temple at Moorabbin, and a Jain temple is under construction in Sydney, where the Sydney Jain Mandal and Vitraag Jain Shwetambar Sangh are the community bodies; we could not confirm a Sydney building with a public address. Several gurdwara addresses above come from community directories rather than the gurdwara’s own site, so ring before you travel.
