Diwali in Guyana 2026

Diwali 2026: Sunday, 8 November 2026

Dates and venues checked against the organisers’ own pages on .

Diwali 2026 in Guyana is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The sun sets at 5:31 pm in Georgetown. Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening after sunset, in the pradosh period — roughly the first two and a half hours after it; the lamps are lit as it gets dark. The biggest public celebrations are the Dharmic Sabha’s Grand Dinner and Concert at the Railway Courtyard on 31 October, the Dharmic Sabha’s regional motorcades, 1–6 November, the Dharmic Sabha’s Deep Jale and bazaar at the Kitty Seawall Roundabout, 4–6 November and the Diwali Motorcade from Campbelville to LBI on 7 November.

Guyana’s Diwali is the Diwali Motorcade. The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, which has run it for more than fifty years, sends floats from Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice from the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbelville to the LBI Community Centre Ground on Saturday 7 November 2026, the evening before Diwali on Sunday 8 November, with a free concert and prize-giving from 7pm; regional motorcades run in Berbice on Sunday 1 November, in Essequibo on Thursday 5 November and in Demerara on Friday 6 November. In the weeks before, the Sabha lights the Kitty Seawall Roundabout in Georgetown (Deep Jale, Wednesday 4 November) and holds a ticketed dinner concert with Ankush Bhardwaj of Indian Idol at the Railway Courtyard on Saturday 31 October.

Deepavali is a public holiday under the Public Holidays Act, which gives it as Deepavali Day or, if that day is a Sunday, the following day. With Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026 the day off is therefore Monday 9 November; the Minister is to publish the notice in the Gazette, and none for 2026 had been found by 30 October, including on the Department of Public Information’s site. Firecrackers are explosives in Guyana: the police warn every year that selling or possessing them without a permit is an offence, so the light at home is oil lamps (deyas).

What Diwali is

The biggest night of the Indian year: lamps, sweets, new clothes and fireworks. Abroad it is celebrated over the surrounding weekends, with one large public event in most big cities.

Diwali marks the return of Rama to Ayodhya and the victory of light over darkness; for many families it is also the day of Lakshmi Puja and the start of a new business year. Homes are cleaned and lit with diyas, sweets are exchanged, and the evening ends with fireworks.
