Nobody needs to own a hammer drill
The Market has a section for lending things out: a day rate, a deposit that is actually required, and a “rented out” switch so you never have to delete and repost the same drill.
Think about the drill in your cupboard. You bought it for one shelf, in one flat, in a country you had lived in for six weeks. It has been used four times since. Somewhere within two kilometres of it, tonight, somebody is pricing up the exact same drill because they also need to put up one shelf.
That is a solvable problem, and it is a specifically expat problem: you arrive with nothing, you need everything once, and you have no shed full of neighbours to borrow from yet.
🧰 Where it lives
The Market now has three sections along the top. Buy & Sell is what it always was. House rentals is property — rooms, studios, flats, with bedrooms and furnished and the fields a lease actually needs. And Rentals is the new one: things. A hammer drill, a camera, a gazebo, a roof box for the summer, a pressure washer, a folding table for the party you are hosting once.
The button says Lend something, because that is what it is.
🔑 What is different from selling
A day rate
Day sits alongside week and month, and it is the default. Nobody rents a hedge trimmer by the month.
A deposit, always
Required on every item — not a checkbox you can skip. It is the lender’s only real protection when a physical object leaves their hands, and it is held by you and returned when the thing comes back.
Condition, stated
The same condition field as a sale. “Fair” on a borrowed drill is useful information, not an insult.
Available from
Optional. Useful when the thing is out until the fifteenth and you would rather say so than field four messages about it.
Rented out, not deleted
📸 Eight photos, and how far away it is
Listings take up to eight photos and now actually show all of them — swipe through, tap for fullscreen, pinch to zoom. For a rental that matters more than for a sale: the scuff on the case and the fact that the bits are included are the whole negotiation.
Every listing also carries where it is and how far that is from you. Lending only works at walking-or-short-drive distance, so this is the feature the whole section leans on — see how the radius works for what the app does with it, including the part where your exact address is never what other people receive.
We do not verify listings, items or their owners
Things worth putting up tonight
The drill, obviously. But also: the carpet cleaner, the pressure washer, the camping gear used one August, the projector, the trailer, the sack barrow, the suitcase in the size you only need for long-haul, the folding chairs from the party. If it has been used four times and cost more than fifty euros, someone within ten kilometres would rather borrow yours than buy theirs.
